Mr. Cannon has been active in the field of Higher Education for over 30 years. His varied career at Auburn University has involved both administration, teaching and research.

For over 20 years, as Coordinator of Training for Auburn University's Center for Governmental Services, he was responsible for developing and directing educational programs for the State of Alabama's Department of Revenue and for various associations of local government officials, such as the Association of County Commissions of Alabama, the Association of Administrators, and the Alabama Association of Public Personnel Administrators.

More recently, as Assistant Director of Auburn University's Master of Public Administration Program, his responsibilities focused upon students, faculty and outreach. His student-focused responsibilities included recruiting and advising, securing internships with federal government agencies and state and local governments. Faculty focused responsibilities included coordinating a faculty-student exchange program with the University of Twente, the Netherlands, and and an endowed lectureship series in public administration and public policy, the Gordon Sherman Lecture Series. Outreach focused responsibilities included developing and coordinating public administration based courses for the Election Center's Professional Education Program.

Mr. Cannon has been a member of the Auburn Methodist Church since coming to Auburn in 1971. He has served on the Administrative Board and as a member of the work area on Education. He has also been active in Scouting and other community area University activities. He is married to Effie Cannon, and they have two adult married children, John and Stephanie, and three granddaughters.
