Biography:
Dr. Fred M. Oien served as Athletic Director for 18 years and Athletic Business Manager for nine years at South Dakota State University. Under his direction he successfully transitioned South Dakota State from a Division II NCAA to Division I NCAA. His leadership included oversight of 21 sports, 485 student-athletes and a staff in excess of 70 personnel. In addition to his duties as Athletic Director, he also served as department head for the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Program, where he taught graduate classes in Athletic Administration and Organizational Leadership at the graduate level.
During his tenure, he lead strategic planning activities for the athletics program and master facility planning activities, which identified immediate, five year and twenty-five year plans for the program.
Dr. Oien earned his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. He retired in April 2009, and shortly thereafter he joined forces with the J.F. Smith Group as a campaign consultant.
