Are You Flex?
By Carol Ownby, Director of Development, McKinney Christian Academy
In today's uncertain economy and unknown future, are you "flex" (flexible) with your donors? When you review your list of donors in arrears and make that dreaded call asking, "What is your intent?", how are you responding if they begin sharing their financial concerns?
Now, more than ever, is the best time to strengthen your donor relations, gain respect for your organization, and retain the funds you have worked so hard to garner. At McKinney Christian Academy, we always try to listen to their financial concerns without interrupting and then offer payment alternatives for their gift. Examples of options we've used at MCA include suggesting they make their payments smaller by adding a year onto their pledge or adjusting the due date of their next payment. If their original pledge is unrealistic (based on a substantial cut in their personal income) ask them for an amount that they can honor rather than losing their support. After all, they would not have made the gift originally if they did not have a passion for your organization.
Remember, the donor you work with today could be one of your major donors when times are better! Make this your season to be "flexible," say "thank you" regardless of the outcome, and build your relationships!
