You’re in the Difference-Making Business. Act Like It.
“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.”
That simple quote sets the tone for everything we do in advancement. Fundraising is not just a job. It is not just asking for money. It is work that fuels missions, transforms lives, and strengthens communities. And if you do not believe that deeply, it will show.
Advancement is a journey, not a destination. Even after decades in the field, there is always something new to learn. The landscape shifts. Donors evolve. Technology changes. But the core principles remain the same.
Many professionals leave fundraising within five years. Not because they lack talent, but because they lack mentoring and clarity. They are told to “go raise money” without being shown how. That is like handing someone a playbook without teaching them the game.
Fundraising is not mysterious. It is disciplined. It is intentional. And it can be taught.
The Formula for Success
There is a simple formula that explains a lot about this business:
Basic Principles + Common Sense × Effort = Success
You can know every theory in the world, but without effort, nothing happens. You can work incredibly hard, but without understanding the fundamentals, you spin your wheels.
The sweet spot is knowing the principles, applying common sense, and putting in consistent effort.
That includes being self-aware. One of the best habits you can develop is to critique yourself after meetings. What did you say well? Where did you miss an opportunity? Did you ask enough questions? Did you listen carefully?
Growth happens in those moments of reflection.
The Four Qualities You Cannot Teach
Development skills can be learned. But there are four qualities that must already be present:
Belief in the mission
If you do not believe in what you represent, you will never communicate it with conviction.Strong communication skills
That means speaking and writing. Both matter.Attention to detail
This is a detailed business. Promises must be kept. Follow up must happen. Records must be accurate.A strong work ethic
You have to be willing to make the calls, schedule the visits, and have the conversations.
If those four are in place, the rest can be developed.
This Is a Relationship Business
Fundraising is not about transactions. It is about relationships. People give to people. They give to leaders they trust. They give to causes they believe in. They give to organizations that communicate clearly and follow through consistently.
You are not just raising money. You are building trust.
And trust is earned one conversation, one promise kept, one thoughtful follow-up at a time.
So the next time you sit down with a donor, remember this: you are not just representing a campaign. You are representing a mission that matters.
Act like what you do makes a difference.
Because it does.
